BAND(its) ON THE (milo)RUN

Posted in Uncategorized on November 30, 2008 by bugobugo

“well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash as we fell into the sun.and the first one said to the second one there, i hope you’re having fun…..

….In the town,they are searching for us everywhere,but we’ll never be found….

And the county judge(rudy b), who had a grudge will search forevermore for the band(its)on the run…..”

The BEATLES-Band On The Run

(28) MILO 42k FINALS…..there was no way in this world that i would be missing the 32nd milo 42k finals.after finishing 5:43 in my first milo full last august 3, i sought redemption.it was payback time all over again.it did not matter that i did the nb25 two sundays ago and my first ultra at pinatubo55 the other saturday.it did not matter that coaches espejo and salazar were kicking my fat ass at the bald runner speed drill training at ultra last wednesday and friday.and certainly,it did not matter that i did not qualify for the finals.and much more,it did not matter that our request for exemption was turned down.no way this full would slip away from my feet.

so i sent a few text messages and there we were, all 8 “unqualified” runners posing as 42k finalists.we registered as 10k runners but all had a full in mind.

and so after barely 2 hours of sleep,i was up at 12:30am just mindlessly rolling all over the bed and waiting for the alarm to go off.then it was D day.

for security and other obvious reasons, our identities couldn't be made public or else, rudy b will come after us.

for security and other obvious reasons, our identities couldn't be divulge or else rudy b will run after us.

we assembled at corner tm kalaw and roxas blvd and after exchange of blah blahs and photo ops,we went to the starting line.actually, outside the pit.and waited for the starting gun and qualifiers to run past us before we would join the fun.as soon as i saw bald runner passed by,i joined in.and i told my fellow bandit, what is milo without the rains?it was drizzling but just enough to cool our yet cold bodies.and that was to be the case in some parts of the route.it was a welcome shower albeit unscheduled.and we were lucky the sun did not shine mightily throughout the race.

as in all rudy b and milo races, there was ample security, marshals, directions, water, sponges and traffic personnel.it was such a joy to cross usually busy intersections and taking time to cross it without honking from vehicles and angry stares from commuters.

making the race kinda manageable was the fact that it was exactly the same route as the august 3 qualifiers.at least for me, i knew where the more difficult segments where.and so as we doggedly pursued our running plans and knowing that we were up against at least 4 hour time limit legit qualifiers,we did our darndest best to keep up if only to redeem ourselves and show them that we got game too!

personally,i got a kick out of overtaking some qualifiers but more importantly,i was enjoying this redemption run.as i hit the mental landmarks for my timing basis,i was happy i was doing well.we arrived at our playground, the fort till bayani road and back.before i knew it ,i was in buendia and roxas boulevard with my fellow bandit.

as in movies, not all bandits make it through the end.well, that is the script but that doesn’t make them less of a bandit, does it? minsang bandit, forever bandit.

of course, the other bandits, the faster ones, kick ass too.they fared better than the other qualifiers.

for next year’s qualifier’s race,i hope to make it 4 hours at least as that is the minimun finals qualifying time.and i have my work cut out for me.as for my finish time,i did,4:32:44.i redeemed myself and cut almost 1 hour 10 minutes from my august 3 failed full.as for the faster bandits, they can only get better by next year.

after the race,i saw vener and his wife and had photos taken.i did not see any other runner-blogger.perhaps,most were resting for their own conquest in singapore next week.your turn guys and girls.good luck!

Pinatubo55 Ash Kickers

Posted in Uncategorized on November 23, 2008 by bugobugo

the idea of doing this run endlessly swirled in my mind the moment i saw the poster invite on marga’s blog site. so, i started asking around and finally got hold of neville manaois of the pinoy ultra runners.after getting a briefing on what this would be,we finally shook hands and sealed the deal after the runningaid4 clinic at rox.

i soon contacted sir jovie,he of baldrunner’s fame, and confirmed his participation.true enough,he was joining.after exchanging a few text messages, all was set.sir jovie, assured me that we would even have security along the route up.astig!i thought this run was going to be a party! a real, long run before milo42.

i decided to do this run for a few reasons.one, i always wanted to go up pinatubo and see for myself what nature has made out of this once-dormant volcano. second, this was a unique run in the sense that it was not really a race but a charity run wherein guests like me would give a donation,in cash or in kind, for the intended charity of choice of neville’s group.this time it was kythe foundation’s christmas party for the children.i thought this would be fun and i wanted to test myself for an ultra.finally an ultra.

let the test begin……

i woke up 1230am after barely 2 hours of sleep and after 2 cups of coffee and a bowl of oatmeal,i fetched my two buddies, nico and george.we left manila at 2am. at 330am and after a brief stopover at capas caltex for another cup of coffee,we were off to the rendevous point at sta. juliana, capas, tarlac.we arrived before the assembly time of 4am and i saw marga all ready to hit the road herself.

i changed to my running gear, stretched, warmed up and horsed around.and waited for sir jovie’s arrival and neville’s as well.it was close to 5am,the agreed take off time.i tried my best to eat a peanut butter sandwich,an egg and nilagang saba and drank gatorade to fuel up even though i was not hungry at all.

soon after,i saw neville and sir jovie together with his trusty and  able lieutenant, captain ferdie espejo.i had the honor of meeting major general samuel narcise ,commanding general of the philippine army light armor division and younger brother of sir jovie and my uppeclassman at the academy, colonel mayoralgo dela cruz, now chief of staff of PALAD.this army unit is based in capas along the road that leads to sta. juliana and is the army’s unit in charge of the army’s light armor units (tanks-thought they are not exacty light, are they?- among many other things).this part of capas looks like a mini general headquarters.i saw of course the army unit, airforce unit and a navy outpost along the road.that assured me of adequate security.

neville gathered the group of almost 30 and announced that we were just waiting for the final clearance from the tourism group and after a prayer we were finally off at 545am.as agreed, our group of sir jovie, capt espejo, myself, george and nico would run together.together with the rest, we walked towards the river for about a kilometer.soon enough the 1st river crossing, though shallow, beckoned.not wanting to wet our feet and shoes and for our ignorance of many other and deeper river crossings, we all scrambled to find spaces on the hood,on top and rear and sides of our 4×4 support vehicle courtesy of sir jovie.and we had to make sure we had a good grip on whatever we could hold on as the driver couldn’t slow down in the middle of the crossing.this was to be the first of many, many, many crossings.soon after ,we were back on our feet and started our run.with another crossing and no 4×4 in sight,it was time to look for portruding rocks and the shallowest part if only to minimize the wetness of our shoes and feet and socks.we were gingerly doing this like playing patintero skipping and jumping on rocks.little did we know this was to be the scenario especially near the summit.this would be repeated countless times.

sir jovie gave instructions for the support vehicle to stop every 5 kms. for us to eat our baons and rehydrate.and for some photo ops with ann, nico’s girlfriend who would surprised me later in the climb, doing the pics along the stops and way.

at this point, the sunwas starting to shine brightly and there was still trail to follow.it was lahar on the feet and greenery on both sides

ask-kicking starts.at this point, the sun was starting to shine brightly and there was still trail to follow.it was lahar on the feet and greenery on both sides

the river bed was correctly described earlier by a friend who was here before.it was a wide, wide river bed spanning at least twice the width of edsa! or even more at some point.the lahar bed was a welcome change to run on having had no choices at bhs or metro manila roads.it was comforting and soft on the soles.along the way ,we met some aetas and greeted them.at one point,we got lost and asked for directions from an aeta boy who just kept pointing.he did not understand us.and so our instincts pointed us to the ground as we looked for the all-too-familiar running shoe sole prints and there were lots from the runners who went ahead.

soon after, the support vehicle was in sight and that meant a short break.pinatubo55-22nov2008-005

and run we did if only to avoid the rising sun.luckily, there was the part of the river bed that was shaded by two big lahar mountains that provided us the comfort and shade till baseline….baseline, point of no return.this is where the 4×4 stops and you are on your own.from here on,there would be no more trails but rocks and narrowing bed and steeper and bigger rocks and narrower routes and spectacular lahar walls as high as 20 storeys ala grand canyon! we had to eat and hydrate and put put our provisions on our back as there would be no more support at this point.we would be on our own.and there was no cellphone signal nor handheld radioes.we had to make sure we had enough water at the least.we reached baseline shortly before 9am and after almost 19k in my garmin50 and almost 3 hours of running.and by 9am,we went off on our own……..we were told by the recon team that it took them 3 hours the day before to reach the summit from here.

we armed ourselves with our hydration bags and summit food making sure we had enough or we would be eating green grass and leaves and insects along the way.at this point, ann would not hear of staying behind and so she joined us going up-in RUBBER SLIPPERS and would later tell us that it was meant for trailing! duh. the innocence of youth- hahaha. i was proven wrong-she made it back to the baseline from the crater with her slippers intact and unscathed, almost 15 kms. 2 way.all up,up and up.rocks, bigger rocks, narrower bed and gorges.and tiptoeing, jumping, skipping and this time no more gingerly steps on water.what the 4×4 could not do, our feet did! we got our feet wet.literally and figuratively!

we chanced upon the 1st army unit courtesy of PALAD manning the route for us after 2 kilometers.and as we were nearing the crater,we met some of the ultra runners coming down.we asked how far more and the answers were 30 minutes then 3 minutes then finally malapit na.along the route at this point, the bed narrowed down from twice edsa to just human size width almost.but the views got better and better each time, lush vegetation and lahar walls and volcanic rocks greeted us and our feet.and the bed we noticed, became drier till it was dry near the summit.i enjoyed the stillness and silence of the run at this point.all i could hear was the pounding of our rubbers, our breathing, the chirping of the birds, the rustling of the leaves, the cool wind blowing in our faces and the cold water drenching our feet.it was hidden paradise.it was silence in its purest form.it was energizing for me at least.i made the correct decision of leaving my ipod.

after 2 hours and 7k of trekking and almost 11am,the crater beckoned.we were in our target.i excitedly climbed the stairs and i was left speechless of what i saw.what i have only seen in media, this time, it was for real.there lay the beauty of pinatubo in all its calmness.to think that 17 years ago, this was hell for many.at the summit and on the way up,we met a sizeable number of visitors, mostly ladies in fact and foreigners too enjoying the sight.and another army unit waiting for us at the summit together with colonel dela cruz who did the shorter skyway route towards the korean spa(yes, the koreans are up here too making business i was told).we made a 125-step stair trip down the crater to wet our feet with crater sulfur water-supposedly with medicinal and curative effects.the crater wall was like a scene out of waterworld where the guys would finally saw dry land.and like a mountain top with snow caps in las vegas’ red rock canyon.

much as we wanted to lie on the crater “shore”,we could not as the surface was too rocky and even painful to step on.we dipped our weary feet and immersed ourselves into the water.surprisingly,it was not warm as i expected of volcano water.nonetheless,i scrubbed away at every inch of my body to gain whatever claimed curative effects sulfur water had.only time will tell if i made the right decision.and it was cold when got out of the water.we shared together more bananas, skyflakes, biscuits, apples, water, eggs, gatorade, jellyace and chocolates.wow, cloud 9 choco.we were literally in cloud nine.we kidded sir jovie that finally we had him all by ourselves away from his swarming fans in manila so we took all the opportunity to have pictures with him and shared some funny and serious boys talk.capt espejo happily unloaded his food for us all.served him well as it would make his load going down lighter and oiur tummies happier.soon after, the lovebirds, nico and ann arrived and we stayed till 12pm at the top.we took time to savor the views, wash off sand from our shoes  and socks and i changed tops myself.and applied more sunblock lotion.the sky was starting to darken and i told them that the rains were likely coming.the wind was turning cooler at noontime.till it was time to leave again.another hard 125-step stair climb up and we found ourselves taking another look at the crater and said our goodbyes.i saw marga and jeremy just arriving at the summit together.soon enough, sir jovie and capt espejo were both dashing like the dickens down the route and out of my sight.what took us 2 hours to trekked up earlier, took us only 1 hour 15 minutes this time back to the baseline again.it was easier to look for rocks to step on this time and the downhill though unnoticeable, made the run down relatively faster.it was baseline all over again and late lunch at 130pm.i had a taste of sir jovie’s menu of ampalaya with tofu-WOW! his once a week must have food i learned.and arroz caldo.and water and gatorade.we had 20 kms to cover on our way back.but i would have none of this.i did not think of what i had done so far nor what lay ahead.i was just savoring the good times.at 145pm we decided to do the last segment back to sta. juliana.this time the route was kinda easier as there was the 4×4 trail to follow once again.we were on our own as the 4×4was left behind to wait for the lovebirds.then the winds started to blow hard that lahar sand hit my face and eyes i had to wear sunglasses.then there a slight welcome drizzle.i later learned that it rained at the summit as nico was “unloading” between rocks and flowing water cooling his fat ass and as the lovebirds were trekking down.

i was doing well, with aching and swelling soles from all the rock pounding.i estimated 2 hours of continuous running to the finish.we threw caution into the wind,we were headed for home and there was no stopping us.i was in the groove so to speak.we were running on time but 2 kms  to the finish and ahead of sir jovie and capt espejo, george and i took a wrong turn and found ourselves lost.for 30 minutes and with no water except for a water spray,we wandered along tall cogon grasses which hindered our view as to where we would be going,we took the wrong turn.true, there was somebody to asked directions from, but the guy and his carabao were at least 2 kms. away and we did not want to expend our remaining energy. i gathered my wits and tried to established our location and re-oriented ourselves.luckily,we chose a path and met a jeepney and asked for directions.we were on the correct path once again.from a distance,we saw sir jovie and capt espejo and our 4×4 support vehicle about to cross the 1st river crossing where earlier in the day,we dreaded to get our feet wet.we crossed the river with no regard to the water nor apprehensions of getting ourseves wet.this was the last river crossing anyway.finish line was calling.

at 4pm and almost 10 hours and 55k on our feet and countless stories and new tales to share,we were finally back the starting point,we made it! the other ultra runners cheered as other runners arrived in batches and they were having red horse too.i think that is their secret to ultra running longevity -horse power! i was thirsty and gulped my gatorade waiting for me. after saying my goodbyes and thank you’s to sir jovie and capt espejo,i removed my rubbers, lay on my back bare on the concrete ground, i lifted my feet up the car bumper to let blood come back up.my feet were sore and soles were kinda swollen from all the rock pounding, my newly-bought nb trails were dirty and wet so were my 2 pairs of socks.but i was  happy that all the ash kickers were all back safe.

nagmumuni-muni.....at the finish.

nagmumuni-muni.....at the finish.

after saying my goodbye to neville and the group, i drove back my truck to the road back home.my running buddies quickly fell into sleep and it was like listening to a choir concert with their snoring.so loud it got that george woke up telling us he woke to the sound of his snore.ann was in denial, but i heard it crystal clear baby, you were snoring like hell!

we stopped at jollibee caltex nlex and  i thought i was seeing double but it was for real.everybody had doubles-double chickenjoys, double burger steaks, double drinks, double rice and double hunger.we shared more stories on the table and along the way back amidst some more snores.my eyes were drooping and sleeeeeepy.

after dropping the guys off,i was home at 9pm,called my masseuse but she was absent.took a shower and hit the bed.in no time,i was asleep.so soundly i guess that i miss my unicef run today.my first missed run.

the morning after.my personal "arsenal and armory" tha carried me throughout.3.5 liters of water,2 liters of gatorade,6 boiled eggs,16 boiled saba,1 power gel,nb all terrain shoes and 2 pairs of wet and dirty socks.

the morning after.my personal “arsenal and armory”-i brought 4 liters of water,2 liters of gatorade,16 nilagang saba,a power gel,3 skyflakes and 6 boiled eggs.i came home with a bruised left knee, wet socks and banged-up new nb’s.

this run would not have been possible if not for neville manaois for accomodating me and my friends, nico and george.thanks bro.

to sir jovie, thank you for you generosity and the company.and for the happy tales along the way.i would love to do any run with you again sir.

to capt ferdie espejo for sharing food and water and gatorade with us all.i understand now why you are such a dependable ally of sir jovie.mabuhay ka!

to george and nico and ann, thank you. ann,you did well doing 14k of rock, river and climbing in your trail rubber sandals and getting a red nose ala rudolph.get well from your fever.

to mgen sammie narcise and col dela cruz and PALAD personnel, thank you for the support and security detail along the way and at the summit. i miss my combat boots and backpack.let’s GO ARMY!

to my garmin footpod for staying alive inspite all the cold water running through you.my nb’s for staying sturdy inspite all the pounding and the grinding.and to my feet,no blisters and dead toe nails this time! sulfur water is good!thank you.

and to the good Lord, thank you for the protection, for keeping me in the company of good people and running friends and the wonder that is Pinatubo.

sir jovie, capt espejo, george, nico and ann- we sure did some serious ash-kicking yesterday!

i am looking forward to the next ultra run from manila to batangas next year.

in the meantime,i have the milo42 to look forward to next sunday.

after my first ultra and pinatibo55, maybe i want to do just this....

after my first ultra and pinatubo55, maybe i want to do just this....

and so, i have once again not only walked the talk this time but i have also hopped, skipped and jumped pinatubo with my ash-kicking friends.

When in Clark, do as Superman does

Posted in Uncategorized on November 16, 2008 by bugobugo

” I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father, Jor-el, to save the planet Earth.’

-Barack Hussein Obama, President-elect, United States of America

(27) 16Nov2008-New Balance Power Race 25k

of course, I am no obama (i am nobama, in fact) and was definitely not born in Krypton and not sent to save earth.but i can be Superman for a day and so were hundreds of other runners today.and run we all did today.

hearing so much and having waited for this race to happen, i arrived in this former american airbase on saturday afternoon.it was not my first time here but it was my first time to let my rubbers lock lips with its roads.this race actually was also serving as the last long run for those who will be doing the milo42 and sing42 in a couple weeks from now.for the first time in an out of town race,i was with the gold’s gym glorietta sole brothers running posse composed of enrico and jay, chinggoy, bookie, arman, boyet, kevin and des.

the morning was greeted with a lazy drizzle that thankfully stopped altogether by the time the race started so likely filipino late.the weather was made perfect by cloudy skies and a cool november breeze.i saw the running regulars from manila at the start-jay,jaymie,junc,vener,atty. dumpit, dindo, chito, george, lester, joe, bards, wilbert and can’t-missed rio with his swaying afro ‘do.so the 25k runners were sent off first and thanks to some pre-race tips of the route from the inhouse clark habitue dindo(datc),i was both excited and wary of the route that i was to run on.from what it appeared to me, it seems we ran the roads less travelled or frequented by visitors or as you would say the “outbacks” of clark.residents ober the bakod, obviously unused to the spectacle of hundreds of early morning runners peeked through their windows and cheered as well as workers at various construction sites and security guards were all agog at the sight of hundreds of pairs of legs, nice or otherwise.

along the route, to the u turn and back,i met bald runner, jerry, ibanrunner, jinoe, markfb and many other familiar face whose names i probably won’t ever know.i just know them to be regulars in road races i have ran in manila.there were husbands and wives teams, singles.just name it,there were lots of runners today.i made a few friends after  the race.the ones whom i had the pleasure of running along with especially going back when we were almost running on empty.

today,i was impressed with the efforts pulled by all runners.this 25k run presented a gargantuan task to fulfill and a mean distance to tackle.i saw the efforts written in the faces of all runners.many were walking back to the finish line but nonetheless finish the race-cramps or no cramps.a mean feat.to name a few superman stuff done today, here are some-there is bards doing her pre-race 5k then the 25k proper and another post-race 5k as if the 25k was not enough itself to sapped her banana powers.there was jay who, the night before, claimed he was having his 2nd honeymoon yet proved once again that “unloading” does not hinder sports performance the morning after in any way judging the way he burned the 25k course.there was sir jovie, retired and all but still a man to beat with his very unique shuffle run. then there’s jerry, ibanrunner and wayne, three non-filipinos yet loving each step they make on our beloved pilipinas.there is jaymie of the bullrunner fame who conquered her first 25k in preparation for her sing21 which i bet my life will just be a peanuts run for her.there is joerge looney who in his own inimitable style ran from the clark main gate to the starting line yet did the 25k in blazing fashion and as if  that were not enough did a “dessert” run with me after.and dindo too who was making his first 25k.then there is the perrenial winner’s podium occupant, annie agoncillo whom i finally had the pleasure of shaking her hand, who finished 1st in her category.another astig effort.in particular, one runner i had the chance of running alongside on the way back was chuchay maronilla.she was,in her own words, seeing stars and started doing a walk and run and breathing “aloud” routine.on the verge of stopping altogether, she pulled herself back together and managed to finish and finished decently i should say-she won 2nd place in her age category.if that is not a superman(woman) effort-coming back from the verge of surrender-yet finishing gallantly, then i do not know what it is.i found out later from her friend, bards, that chuchay was nursing an injury on her feet.and yet a very good finish.

and the list goes on.countless and nameless other runners exerted superman(woman)efforts today to conquer what clark and new balance had to offer.

as it has been said, when in rome,do as the romans do and so must it be here as well-when in clark,do as Superman does.

thank you new balance for making my sunday.i love running all the more.

and to all the runners who were supermen(women) today, take a bow.

good times.

VSO 15k-a run as cool as rio’s ‘do

Posted in Uncategorized on November 16, 2008 by bugobugo

(26) 09Nov2008- when you race in any of rio’s road race, expect things to be as cool as his afro hairdo.lots of water, marshals and logistics.except for that little snag called start delay, everything else went well.uphills galore and the peace of the seemingly endless flats of heritage proper punctuated the 15 kilometer race course.with his trusty ate merlene at the finish line and scores of finish line marshals, there was no mizuno rush to infinity 2 chaos scenario this time.

as it is starting to become a habit, the gang of 5 had a 9 km after-race “dessert” run to mkh and back at bhs.

man, rio, i have ran out of words to say about this race.

cool.

After burying the ghost in Baguio 2 days back, I was headed for a meeting in my hometown in Bayombong,Nueva Vizcaya some 260 kilometers away via the old route. Thanks to a newly-opened and rehabilitated road via Ambuklao Dam, the trip is now possible within 3-4 leisurely hours. With spectacular views along the way, the distance from baguio to my hometown was shortened to just 137k.

Having passed this way a few times since last year and having been incurable from that running bug bite,I toyed with the idea of running the ambuklao to kayapa stretch-all 37k of endless winding roads and uphills (upmountains is more like it). And so i came prepared or so i thought.i had a mental picture of where the hard climbs would be at (and i was so wrong).

and i am off....

and i am off....

let the fun begin….

I arrived at the dam site at around 5:30am,01nov2008.as always, this day was cloudy and the rain seemed ready to fall anytime.but it was not as cold as i thought it would be.sun was kinda peeking and there were a couple of other cars whose passengers were viewing the area. and after talking to some people gathering freshly-caught tilapia from the fishpens along the lake,i started to stretch and warm up and then i put on my running face and attitude.there was simply much to conquer.interestingly,as i was about to crossed the dam,the siren sounded signalling that it was 6:00 a.m.

at the first turn less than a kilometer away, i knew that there would be this real long climb.and this was my first mistake.it was really long that  it took me 1 hour to reach the peak! or at least the 1st flat so to speak.

after 30 minutes or so, i decided to take a short breather and viewed the lake from above.i noticed that i was sweating already.i was just 4 kilometers from where i started.i was wondering if i would be able to make all 37 .so,i told myself that a 10 on this kind of inclines will do.but as soon as i hit the 1st flat,i started to feel good again and i rev up my legs for a downhill run.finally, after 1 hour of running up!

1st downhill,at last!

...downhill....

after running for 1 hour and 37minutes, i finally caught sight of the first sign of civilization

and edible food.my watch read 13.83 kms.i was feeling good because i would be having hot breakfast and a short rest to stretch my legs and freshen up.people i met walking along the way were starting to look at me with blank stares and so i made it a point to greet them in the dialect and told them where i came from and where i was headed and that i was running that stretch.did i get more wide-eyed blank stares! it didn’t need rocket science to read what was written on their lips.this route is usually done by cycling dudes so the folks here were in for a surprise to see the 1st nut case running their road.

after a quick breakfast where i had sinigang na tilapia, gatorade and piping-hot rice at the gurel eatery near the bokod/pulag sign junction, i went on to resume my run.this distance of 13.74 kms. took me all  of 1hour 59 minutes to complete! i did not see it coming but this part was almost 80% climbs…..but some of the best views that took my breath away (besides,i was tired too) were in this segment of the run.along the way, there were rockslides.i hope the government will take time to protect this road as this is a very nice place and i can say this is perhaps what baguio used to be early on-pine trees galore, fresh, nippy air and REAL pine scents wafting in the air.i would run on bed of dried pine needles when my feet was sore and sometimes bathe myself from the cold water that came from roadside springs.talk about water stations, these are the real deal with real spring water.

as the kilometer readings along the way continued to show me nearer my destination,i felt both excited and tired at the thought of what remained to be done and what i have accomplished so far.

i wish pictures could talk.this part just blew me away.thick pine tree forest walled the road.there was nothing like running on dried pine needles which were of so much comfort to my now tired feet.and the air was just so pure and pine-y.i did my longest breathing exercises here.

after a quick stop to refresh myself from a busted overhead spring water hose, i checked my watch and it read 28 kms. and almost 4 hours.it was a relief that i surpassed 21k as i was thinking again that a 21 with this terrain was good enough.but i was still feeling good.besides,i knew that downhills were ahead after this 2 hour tortous climb.there can be no other way but down and that was what i kept pounding in my almost fagged out mind.

these last 4 kms. of climbs which were part of the last 9 kms. to the finish took me 30 minutes to complete.it was really difficult. but soon came into view, the boundary arch of benguet and nueva vizcaya-i was almost home!

having reached the peak of the road,i finally hit my home province.and it meant 1 thing. i had 5 kms. more till “down” town kayapa.and so i sprinted like hell and 5 kms. took me 30 minutes.along the route lay vegetable terraces where your green, leafy vegetables are grown.some of the produce here are brought to baguio so do not believe the vendors when they say that they are selling you baguio beans-haha.because they are not.

kayapa is blessed with baguio-like temperatures but without the traffic and pollutin and squatters.kayapa is vizcaya's hidden summer capital.it is cold up here.

after 5++ hours of running uphills, smelling the pine trees, talking to myself, singing along with itunes, greeting folks along the way and sprinting downhills, kayapa beckoned.it is a wee small town with just a lone main road that takes it to the main highway towards manila to the south or cagayan to the north.my watch read 40 something kilometers.and my mind kept whispering-full,full,full….i kept answering back-fool,fool,fool. but indeed, i was just short of over a couple of kilometers only to make it a full 42.195.my legs were tired and aching and sore at this point.the sun was finally up and it was almost 12 high noon.but since i have gotten this far and i thought i would have been the biggest fool if i did not go on to finish a measly 2 more kilometers to complete a fullh-huh!-and so i run again downhill or so i thought-mistake again.after a brief downhill,it was uphill like no other for almost 20 minutes.i struggled and kept looking at  my watch for it to finally register 42.2 and when it finally did,i gave myself an extra 500 meters to make it 42.71. at last, the journey for now was over.i had a meeting to catch at 4pm.

Finally,with feelings.and 2 wannabee escorts.

Finally,with feelings.and 2 wannabe escorts.

as i stretched and cooled down and sipped on my last supply of water,i mentally jogged my mind way back when the kilometer post read 37 then finally 0. i honestly thought i wouldn’t last.

after  5:37 on the road, 2 liters of gatorade and 2 liters of water plus a running bad ass attitude and 3,110 calories spent , i finally made it.

on my way home that night, this time in the comforts of my  truck,i noticed and could not believe the route i took earlier in the day.from where my 2 hour climb was, this time it was my truck seemingly begging for relief judging from the burning smell of new brake pads getting a good brake-in. from all the downhills.i was home in baguio at 2:30am ,02nov after a 3 1/2 hour trip from my hometown.

as an afterthought,i have two wishes from this run- first, is to do it again, and second, to do it with you my fellow running friends and bloggers.i am confident you will enjoy this run and have fun as much as i did and forget the pain and soreness of it all after going through it.take time to visit my home province.that goes for diehard cyclists too.if you want something like what kennon road has to offer without the traffic and pollution, this route is yours for the pedalling.

i will see you on the road soon again.thank you for staying with me in this home run.i hope you enjoyed the sceneries.

i have walked the talk and let my rubbers lock lips with this road. this run is history.
